KWIC World Issues Café International Women’s Day Presentation
PETERBOROUGH – On Thursday, March 8th the Kawartha World Issues Centre will celebrate International Women’s Day with a KWIC World Issues Café multi-media presentation, panel and discussion on the theme Building a Culture of Peace: gender, sexuality and building solidarity across borders and binaries with invited international and local guest speakers.
International Women’s Day is celebrated around the world and has its roots in the international labour, socialist, and peace movements that were active early in the 20th century. This year’s local theme poses the question, “How do we dismantle a culture that promotes violence and isolation?” Moderator Dr. Nadine Changfoot, Associate Professor in Politics at Trent University, will encourage dialogue as panelists explore fresh perspectives on gender visibility, intersecting identities, liberating spaces, institutional accountability and building solidarity.
This year’s presenters, who will lead the discussion with ingenuity and from a place of diverse experience, include Sid Jordan and Selma Al-Aswad, from the Reteaching Gender and Sexuality Project and Put THIS on the MAP, Paula Sherman, Associate Professor in Indigenous Studies, Trent University, and Co-Chief of the Ardoch Algonquin First Nation and Khadija Warsame, Community Activist and Speaker, New Canadians Centre Speakers Bureau.
The KWIC World Issues Café will be held from 7:00 to 8:30 pm at the Peterborough Public Library (345 Aylmer St. N.) with real café style coffee and child friendly space provided. Suggested cost is $5/person or pwyc.
Come early and have some fun! Library auditorium doors open at 5:30pm with a community potluck, crafting and information exhibits and conversation with the Peterborough Women’s Events Committee and Older Women’s Network. Free. Please bring a dish to share. At 8:30 pm, women are invited to an Open Mic and IWD Pub at Sadleir House hosted by PARN: Peterborough’s Community AIDS Resource Network.
